Web App Revolution

People in technology spaces may have noticed a growing trend: web-based applications. Microsoft is pushing it with their "new" Outlook and M-Files has just released the first version of their "new" Desktop client which is in fact just their latest web application wrapped for deployment on Windows with a few extra bells and whistles. These are only two of many examples.

Some may be left wondering why? What's the point of changing the applications that we know and love? The most important reason is feature parity across platforms both for developers and end users. Maintaining multiple solutions with different features and limitations depending on the platform can turn into a nightmare, especially for growing companies. Many applications are still developed separately for Windows, iOS, Android, and the web. This means that every update and new feature must be implemented, tested, and deployed separately for each of those applications. And the user experience often differs in minute and confusing ways. Everyone has encountered that thing that works on the web or desktop but not the mobile app.

What if it were possible to develop a single application that runs on every device? That would mean that every new feature and update only needs to go to that single application and that once a user has used the solution on one platform, they understand how to use it everywhere else too. These are the problems that web-based applications solve. Every modern device and operating system can run a web browser. Simply speaking this means that an application that runs in a web browser can run on every device.  Many modern mobile applications are in fact wrappers for a web browser, but it still enables other key functionality like push notifications and a dedicated icon for ease of opening.
