Oracle WebCenter Content (WCC) is an industry leader in the content management sphere. It is recognized across public and private organizations for its capabilities in managing documents, records, digital assets, content publishing and more.
Although it has had functional updates and improvements at regular intervals, for the first time since 2015, a new version of WebCenter Content is set to release—Oracle WebCenter Content 14c.
WebCenter Content 14c will feature several improvements over the current version 12c. In anticipation of the new version’s release, we’ll take a look at the differences between WebCenter Content 12c vs 14c to show how much the new edition will be able to optimize your enterprise content management operations.
Moving to version 14c is more than a simple WebCenter Content upgrade. WCC 14c has made huge advancements in cloud-forward technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and security and service plan updates.
As workforces continue to evolve , making optimal use of the integrations, cost savings, and security of cloud technology is more important than ever. To that end, cloud integration has been a major focus of this new version of WebCenter Content.
Specifically, WCC 14c was built to interface seamlessly with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). That interface also gives access to OCI Marketplace Images, which allows for faster deployment of instances and patch set updates.
The Oracle Cloud marketplace and, specifically, OCI Marketplace Image allows you to resolve a number of use cases—including simplified environment setup, enhanced scalability, and reduced infrastructure management overhead.
One function that has been improved as a part of Oracle WebCenter Content 14c is content containerization. By simplifying the storage of information using Images to represent and sort instances and Kubernetes to deploy instances across your apps, you can scale up an environment in mere moments.
That means WebCenter Content can pull the information and architecture you need from anywhere in your organization’s cloud and put it to use via new nodes and containers to facilitate the completion of new tasks with minimal set-up time.
Artificial intelligence is an ever-evolving tool in content management. No one is quite sure where the technology will go and what it will be capable of in the next few years, but in order to get the most out of what it can do right now and to be prepared for the future, you need a platform that can support AI integration.
Oracle AI Services help streamline and automate your content management processes, and Oracle WebCenter Content 14c supports those AI services perfectly. Generative AI helps your team in many ways.
From helping summarize emails to allowing the use of smarter search functions to streamlining document processing workflows to providing automated insights based on up-to-the-minute-accurate information, Oracle AI Services through the new WebCenter Content make the lives of your teams much easier and more productive.
Your enterprise content management software needs to be able to protect your information and needs to run smoothly at all times. A problem with your software could cost you massive amounts of money for every hour your system is down. WCC 14c has you covered.
Version 14c has every security update and innovation that was rolled out for version 12c incorporated into its system from day one. It is certified for use with JDK, Oracle Database 23ai, OS, and your browsers.
The service plan for Oracle WebCenter Content 14c has been lengthened out to five years of standard support with three years of extended support. That means that you will have eight years of coverage to help troubleshoot problems as they arise. If Oracle keeps to the same development schedule that they had between 12c and 14c, that could mean support coverage for the entire lifecycle of this version of WebCenter Content.
In addition to the primary content management system upgrades we’ve looked at, there are some great feature upgrades that WebCenter Content is rolling out with version 14c.
Enterprise document management updates don’t do much good if your content management platform can’t interface with the programs and applications you create and edit your content in. With the new WCC, Oracle is simplifying and streamlining the API development and implementation process.
Version 12c used a Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) for its API functions. This was great, for a time, but as technology has advanced, so too must API architecture. There are tools that are easier to use and that can create more future-proof APIs with third party applications.
In the case of Oracle WebCenter Content 14c, making the transition from SOAP to REST API support made the most sense. Representational State Transfer (REST) API is far more data driven than SOAP (which is driven by function recognition more than purely by data).
REST is considered to be simpler to work with and is viewed as a faster system than SOAP. This is because REST can work with more data formats than SOAP and uses a stateless communications protocol that is a great facilitator of standardizing inter-application architecture.
Allowing your teams to use the tools that work best for them is a key to a good content management platform. Microsoft’s suite of productivity tools such as Microsoft 365 or Windows 11 are major parts of many organizations’ software ecosystems.
Several WebCenter platform enhancements have been put in place to make the interface with Microsoft’s applications as simple and reliable as possible. Your team will be able to store important content through WebCenter while using it to search for key data directly to the Microsoft program they need to execute their tasks.
Oracle WebCenter Content 14c is going to be around for a good long while, so why does it make sense to make the switch now?
The short answer is that, the sooner you upgrade, the sooner you can improve your content management operations. The long answer is a bit more detailed.
The cloud-focused philosophy and improved containerization functionality make it easier for your team to collaborate on projects and interface with key data no matter where in the world they need to access that information.
You also put your organization in a good position to continue to optimize your content management. Oracle will be focusing on version 14c of WebCenter Content for all of its updates soon, and you don’t want to let your data sit in an obsolete system when you could be on the cutting edge.
